Ngala Private Game Reserve is an intimate sanctuary tucked away in South Africa’s renowned Greater Kruger National Park, with unfenced borders to the world’s largest and most famous game reserve. Set along the serene Timbavati River, this hidden gem spans 14,700 hectares (36,324 acres) of untouched wilderness. Known for its exceptional wildlife sightings, Ngala is particularly celebrated for its resident Birmingham Pride, a group of lions distinguished by a rare gene strain, which has led to the birth of several rare white lions over the years. Following the Ngala Tented Camp grand reopening in October 2024, after a stunning transformation by Fox Browne Creative and Jack Alexander Architecture Studio, this beloved retreat has evolved into something even more extraordinary.

We had the privilege of visiting Ngala Tented Camp a few years ago, before the transformation began. Now, stepping into the reimagined camp, we were struck by the immediate sense of space and openness in contrast. The path leading from the entrance turning circle to the lodge feels lighter, more inviting, with a grander, more contemporary aesthetic that flows seamlessly with its natural surroundings. The camp’s modern design brings an elegant edge to the rustic charm of the bush, but for us - it’s the thoughtful details that make it so unique!

One of the most striking changes we noticed is the new colour palette, which replaces the deep greens of the previous design with warm terracotta, burnt orange, and rich reds, hues that seem to echo a mix of the earthen tones of the Timbavati River sand, the vibrant fabrics of the local Shangaan culture, and the fiery glow of a safari sunset. This infusion of colour is fresh and inspiring, and I couldn’t help but feel that it was a beautiful tribute to the both the land and the local people who call this place home.

It was not just the colours that caught our attention though, as we explored the camp, we discovered something truly special that brought an added layer of meaning to our stay - the embroidered birds and animals that grace the walls, furniture, and linens, all species found within the area bringing more of the surrounding wilderness into the lodge space. I was particularly delighted when we entered our suite, only to be greeted by an intricately embroidered lion at the entrance (which I really wanted to take home with me!). These stunning works of art are the creations of local women from Kaross Studio (read more about them here), whose skillful craftsmanship not only adds beauty but also embodies empowerment and the celebration of local talent - which we absolutely love to see when it comes to creating a new lodge!

While the design elements were undoubtedly impressive, the true heart of Ngala Tented Camp lies in its people. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that the warmth and generosity of the team set the tone for the entire experience. The manager, Dennis who we had met on our previous visit, went out of his way to ensure our every need was met with grace and kindness (as always). Our butler MK was a bundle of joy, his infectious enthusiasm was felt in every interaction, making us feel like part of the Ngala family thoughout our stay.
Another familiar face from a previous visit added to the sense of homecoming - Selby, who we had first met at andBeyond Tengile River Lodge, was now working his magic behind the bar at Ngala Tented Camp. Known for his inventive bush-inspired cocktails, he made each evening feel like a celebration around the bar area. It’s these personal touches and seeing faces that welcome you as if you’ve never left that make the experience so much more memorable.
Another detail that stood out for me was the “STAR in training” embroidered onto the uniforms of certain staff members. This small yet meaningful touch is part of the andBeyond mentorship program, which provides local talent with the opportunity to train and grow within the hospitality industry. It was heartwarming to see these rising stars being celebrated and supported by the team, and it reminded us of the profound impact that tourism can have on the surrounding communities - a little detail thay really made me smile.

As for the rooms themselves, they blend seamlessly into the landscape, offering a sense of solitude and immersion in nature. You truly feel as though you’re tucked away in your own private tent in the middle of the bush, yet with every modern comfort and luxury at your fingertips. It’s the perfect balance of rustic charm and thoughtful design. Plus! The Ngala morning Chai delivery through your butlers hatch makes for an even more authentic stay - its delish! and we highly reccomend it!
And of course, the game viewing was nothing short of spectacular. Ngala - meaning “lion” in Shangaan, lives up to its name in this area! With unforgettable sightings of big cats, elephants, and an array of other wildlife (birding too), we were blown away by the wilderness experience. Our guide and tracker were exceptional, ensuring we had a front-row seat to all of the action.

Looking back on our time at Ngala Tented Camp, it’s clear that this place has not just been reimagined, it has been completely redefined. Every element, from the thoughtfully designed décor to the heartfelt service from the staff, reflects a commitment to excellence and an undeniable attention to detail. It’s a place where the natural beauty of the bush is seamlessly woven with modern comfort and an authentic, local touch. We wholeheartedly recommend making Ngala Tented Camp a part of your next South African safari itinerary - trust us, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget!
Whether you’re here for just a few days or have the luxury of a longer stay, Ngala offers the perfect balance of immersion in nature while still providing the warmth and comfort of a true home-away-from-home. We’re already counting the days until we can return to our Ngala Tented Camp family, and we hope that it will capture your heart as it did ours.
